Boban returned to his best form to win the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350 metres after being given a great ride by Glyn Schofield; in a three-horse war over the concluding stages Boban proved just too strong for Charlie Boy and Generalife. With a strong speed from the outset the 10,000 was set-up for the backmarkers and the three placegetters all came from well back in the field; Knoydart and Sacred Star were the best of the rest but they were more than three lengths astern of Boban. Boban captured his fourth Group 1 with his 10,000 success and it was his first since he defeated It's A Dundeel in the Chipping Norton at Warwick Farm in March 2014. Boban has not been the same horse since then so it was a great training performance by Chris Waller to have Boban at his best again.
Solicit just defeated Peace Force in the Hawkesbury Crown at Rosehill a fortnight ago but Peace Force had her revenge on Solicit winning the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes for fillies and mares over 1350 metres by a nose; from her last nine starts Peace Force has recorded five wins, three seconds and a third so Peace Force is both very talented and consistent. Peace Force was only second-up in the Glenlogan so it likely that there is more improvement and she will continue to be very competitive in her remaining races this Winter. Solicit has returned to her best form and she was gallant in defeat carrying 59.5kg.
The Peter Moody-trained Upham proved too good for Redoutable Heart and Master Of Arts in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes for three year olds over 2020 metres; Upham was given a perfect ride by Kerrin McEvoy and it enabled Upham to record his first Queensland victory after a second to Worthy Cause in the Gunsynd Classic at the Gold Coast and a second to Sadler's Lake in the Rough Habit at Doomben. Upham is racing in great heart and he is a genuine contender for the Queensland Derby. The favourite Sadler's Lake was given no peace in-front and his effort to finish fifth was better than it looks on-paper.
Gai Waterhouse's Bohemian Lily made a one-act affair of the Group 2 Roses for three year old fillies over 2020 metres; taken to the front early by Blake Shinn Bohemian Lily ran along at a strong pace and she was well-clear at the top of the straight. Bohemian Lily showed no signs of stopping and she romped-home by four lengths from Col 'n' Lil and Whatalovelyday. The favourite Platinum Witness and fellow New Zealander Exquisite Jewel never looked likely and they were well-beaten. Bohemian Lily will face a much better field in Saturday's Queensland Oaks but in her current form she will be very competitive.
Gai Waterhouse made it a double when Najoom proved classes above her rivals in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic for three year olds over 1350 metres; after drawing an outside barrier Najoom had to endure a wide run throughout but it made no difference as she bounded to the lead when Tommy Berry released the brakes early in the straight. So impressive was Najoom that she has been elevated to favouritism for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap on Saturday week. Najoom is not nominated for the Stradbroke but if all is well with Najoom connections will almost certainly pay the $30,000 late entry fee.
At Flemington Robert Smerdon's Lumosty was again super-impressive in winning The Straight Six over 1200 metres; Lumosty is down the list in the Order Of Entry for the Stradbroke but she is likely to gain a start. If that is the case Lumosty is a genuine winning chance in her current form with only 50.5kg. Makybe Diva's three-quarter sister La Amistad has generally been disappointing during her career but like her famous relation La Amistad really appreciated the Flemington 3200 and she proved far too good in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes; Sonntag battled-on strongly for second under his 60kg with Zabeelionaire third but they were no match at all for La Amistad.
