The King Is Dead, Long Live The King

Australia's greatest ever horse trainer, Bart Cummings, has died peacefully surrounded by his family in Sydney in the early hours of Sunday morning, aged 87.

Affectionately and accurately crowned "The Cups King", decades before he trained Viewed to win his 12th Melbourne Cup in 2008, Bart also trained the winner of 7 Caulfield Cups, 5 Cox Plates, 4 Golden Slippers, 9 VRC Oaks, 8 Newmarket Handicaps, 10 Mackinnon Stakes, 5 Caulfield Guineas, 5 Doncaster Handicaps, 7 Lightning Stakes and 13 Australian Cups to bring his tally of Group 1 wins to a phenomenal 268.

What makes Bart's Melbourne Cup record so astonishing is that no other trainer in racing history has trained more than 5 winners of Australia's greatest race. The 2015 Melbourne Cup will not be the same without James Bartholomew Cummings.

Watch Saintly, one of Bart's best and most popular horses, win the 1996 Melbourne Cup.
